Mixtape Makers Aim to Craft the Ultimate Social Gaming Experience
In the realm of adventure gaming, narratives often center on grand mysteries or quests for lost artifacts. However, the upcoming title Mixtape, published by Annapurna Interactive, takes a different route. This game focuses on the light-hearted misadventures of a group of young friends as they navigate their final days together before entering adulthood. The narrative shines a spotlight on how music acts as a unifier among people, emphasizing the fun and unpredictable nature of youth.
Developed by Beethoven and Dinosaur, the same creative team behind The Artful Escape, Mixtape pays homage to the classic vibes of ’90s Americana. My recent experience playing a build of Mixtape led to an insightful conversation with game director Johnny Galvatron, where he shared his love for iconic ’80s and ’90s films that influenced the game’s design. One key challenge he noted was the difficulty in making “idleness,” a natural part of teenage life, engaging in a video game setting.
“Exploring idleness in video games is tricky,” Galvatron stated. “Being a teenager often involves periods of just hanging out, which can be boring. Our goal was to create a game that authentically reflects that experience.”
He further elaborated, “It’s challenging to create a narrative that captures the essence of hangout films like Wayne’s World or Dazed and Confused while ensuring the pacing remains engaging enough for gaming audiences.”
Set in the ’90s, the game follows Rockford and her friends Slater and Cassandra as they prepare for one last thrill ride into adulthood. Rockford’s ambitious move to New York City aims to connect with her musical idol. Along the way, the group reflects on cherished memories—from late-night fast food runs to mischievous escapades—always accompanied by the soundtrack of their youth.

At its core, Mixtape is an interactive coming-of-age tale featuring a band of rebellious teens, where nostalgia translates into playable mini-games. These segments present lively, exaggerated memories that illustrate their emotional state, enhanced by the retro sounds of bands like Devo and Joy Division. The game effectively taps into the sentiment that youthful moments often feel larger than life.
One engaging segment involved an interactive head-bobbing game during a car ride to get fast food. Players must synchronize actions with the beat, creating moments of humor that showcase the silliness of Rockford and her friends. This particular scene harkens back to filmmaking techniques in movies like Pulp Fiction, with its playful take on simulated driving sequences.
However, not every moment is lighthearted. A somber segment involves the friends getting into trouble, leading one to take the fall to protect Rockford from expulsion. This poignant moment underscores the complexities of friendship and sets the stage for deeper narrative conflicts.
Mixtape immerses players in the experiences of a specific cultural era, vividly capturing the essence of the MTV generation and its overlapping influence on media and youth expression. The game employs a distinctive “mixed media, liquid television” editing style, integrating clips from beloved TV shows and films to enhance its emotional and comedic elements. Rockford even engages in Ferris Bueller-style narration to connect with players.
Given the current trend of adapting video games into films, Galvatron has hinted at the possibility of a movie adaptation for Mixtape.
“Annapurna is a film studio, so those discussions have occurred, and the meetings are incredibly enjoyable,” he shared. “I can envision it happening, but I would prefer to remain hands-off in any adaptation process.”
Galvatron emphasized the importance of adapting game narratives for different mediums: “When creating video games, they should be modified to fit the medium effectively. Sticking too rigidly to the source material can lead to challenges. Should there be a Mixtape adaptation, I would take a step back.”
Mixtape emerges as a heartfelt celebration of ’90s culture. While the nostalgia factor is evident, it also conveys a more profound message. Participating in these exaggerated adventures of youth has me eagerly anticipating the final release. I look forward to relishing in the simple joys of timeless hangouts with friends.
The game is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S later this year.
